The Korea Professional Football Association hosted a media day for four K-League teams participating in the AFC Asian Champions League (ALC) in the 2024-2025 season at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the soccer center in Jongno-gu, Seoul. The day also served as the media day for the opening of the K-League 1.
Ulsan HD, Pohang Steelers, Gwangju FC, and Jeonbuk Hyundai attended the media day with their respective team coaches and representative players Kim Young-kwon (Ulsan), Jeon Min-kwang (Pohang), Lee Min-ki (Gwangju), and Park Jin-seop (Jeonbuk).
This season's K-League will open on Feb. 15, two weeks earlier than the previous one. This is due to the influence of hosting the ACLE Tournament from April to May, the FIFA Club World Cup in June, and the EAFF E-1 Championship in July.
The official opening match of the K League 1 was a showdown between the defending league champion and the defending Korea Cup champion. Hence, Ulsan and Pohang had to face off each other based on last year's performance, but due to schedule, they will have to hold the opening match on different days.
Gus Foye, the coach of Jeonbuk Hyundai, is also in the position. "I learned about the quality of Jeonbuk," Foye, who hosted the inaugural press conference on Dec. 30 last year, said. "I definitely thought it was my place. I am positive about learning a new culture. Of course, the most important thing is victory."
On the day, Foye said, "I am happy to become the coach of Jeonbuk. Jeonbuk knows that it always has to aim for the trophy."
Last season, Jeonbuk finished the season in 10th place in the league, and had a rough season going all the way to the promotion and playoffs. Coach Foye knew this, too. "Last year's performance was not good. I hope we can aim for the trophy, but I will fight for a better performance than last season. In the long run, we will do our best to return to where Jeonbuk deserves to be. We are participating in the ACL2, and it would be fantastic if we win the trophy here," he said, adding that he will challenge for the championship on the international stage.
How is the training going? "As you know, it's difficult. It's not easy because the weather is cold and the ground is frozen. Even in such a tough situation, coaches have to plan programs and conduct training sessions. We have two games to go next week. We will do our best," he said.
Foye, who is new to the K-League, said, "I came here to learn Korean soccer. The sooner we know about the characteristics of a player or league, the better it will be for the team. The part that we are discussing with the club is to create an environment in which players can improve their skills. As a result, if more players are drafted from Jeonbuk for the national team and they can produce results, it will be a way to help Korean soccer."
"He is the only foreign coach in the K-League 1. As a foreign coach, I understand his responsibility. I understand that soccer requires me to play under pressure all the time. 온라인카지노 I will do my best under the pressure as much as I can," he said.
As he is a foreign coach for the first time in the K-League, he did not have an easy time forecasting the season. "It is difficult to predict at the moment. Realistically, it is hard to predict who will be at the top at this stage. I was welcomed by three coaches (Kim Pan-gon, Park Tae-ha and Lee Jung-hyo), but it is difficult to judge the competition structure. I think other coaches would have known better and answered better," he said.
